WENTWORTH, N.C. — The Rockingham County District Attorney’s Office will not seek the death penalty against an Eden woman in the death of her 17-month-old daughter, according to Rockingham Now.

Heather Marie Gwynn faces first degree murder charges after her 17-month-old daughter was found unresponsive and later died on July 11.

The girl’s father, Antonio Maurice Gwynn, faces a second-degree murder charge in the death.

Officers and emergency responders found the child, Toni, unresponsive at the family home just after 2 p.m. on July 11. Police said she was taken to Morehead Memorial Hospital where she later died.

An autopsy report said the suspects, both 22 at the time, starved and suffocated their daughter.

The child also had bruises on her chest and shoulders where the car seat was strapped too tight, according to an autopsy.

Warrants also show Antonio stuffed a blanket in the toddler’s mouth to stop her…
